Graduation festivities

This weekend, Beale received a hug from an otter, a wave from a sea lion and quite a fright from an arial dance rope (web? piece of fabric?)… anyway… it was quite an adventure for Beale (and for her parents).

The three of us made the trek to Santa Cruz, California, in two separate cars. Mom rode with our good friend R. (O’Malley’s Momma!); Dad and Beale rode with R.’s husband, S. The five of us met up at a bar in Santa Cruz. It was a new experience for Beale, as the bar was quite “college-town” (smoky and loud and crowded). She also witnessed her first game of pool (I think. There may have been others, but I think this was another new experience.). Beale handled it all like a pro.

In the hotel room, Dad put a towel on the floor for Beale’s “bed” and asked her to lie down. From that moment on, that towel was Beale’s spot. She could be found there whenever we were in the hotel room. This was a DREAM COME TRUE, after Miss Trego, who would have shared the bed with me or wandered the room all night had she been asked to sleep somewhere without a kennel.

In the morning (EARLY in the morning) we all drove to Monterey Bay to witness our friend M.’s graduation. The graduation was held in a football stadium, and it was quite a crowd.

Our friend M. is the pretty one in sunglasses with the big smile. She graduated last weekend!

Again, Beale was a pro. Leon Panetta was there, and Dad tried REALLY hard (but failed) to get Beale’s picture with him. (The CIA flies planes out of Beale AFB.) The ceremony took about two hours, during which Beale had the chance to meet the CSU Monterey Bay mascot, a large otter named Monte Ray.

After the graduation festivities, Beale asked to borrow M.’s graduation cap so she could see what it felt like. It turns out Beale is NOT ready to graduate. She’d like to be a puppy for a little bit longer.

Because we had just witnessed M.’s graduation (yay!) we of course had to party a bit. M.’s friends and family members met up at a bar called 99 Bottles for beer (duh) and fried food and celebration of M.’s success. The party later continued at M.’s cousin’s house, where M., her cousin and many of their friends (including Dad!) did some arial dancing. (I know, it sounds weird, but it is REALLY cool.) R. has some pictures and video of Beale’s reaction, which we will post sometime soon. In short, she freaked out. Beale was watching her friends and her Dad float about three feet off the ground (well, swing, really) on big strips of fabric. It was incredibly cool, but really hard for Beale to wrap her head around. By the end of the night, though, our girl had herself under control and was a happy camper.

On Sunday, R. took Beale, Mom, Dad and S. to the beach in Santa Cruz. You may remember that Beale loves the beach. She didn’t love the boardwalk quite so much, but we found out pretty quickly that it was because she needed to “hurry up” and there was no place to go. Ooops!

While at the boardwalk, Beale got a look at some sea lions, but we don’t have a picture. Then we drove back to Sacramento and CRASHED. It was a hectic weekend and Beale did wonderfully. She’s SO easy. I should have named this blog something else. Oh well.

In success and failure and with love,

Becka and Beale
